Even with his extra long arms, he couldn't quite hold up the whole thing all at once. I like the transparent look on this one, because you can more clearly see the fabric pattern and color difference between the white flowers and creamy coffee background like this.<br />

And the back, which pretty much used up every piece of the extra fabric, plus some teal-ish stuff I had sitting around:<br />

When the latest Cotton + Steel fabric lines came out recently, I discovered the <a href="http://www.cottonandsteelfabrics.com/catalog/fabric/collection/12/?page=2" target="_blank">Bespoke double gauze</a> collection from Cotton + Steel. I had never seen or felt this fabric before, but the <a href="https://vimeo.com/109692548" target="_blank">video</a> about the fabric (soft! fluffy!) convinced me to go out on a limb and get some of the "ephemera mustard" fabric.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Other folks (<a href="https://www.fancytigercrafts.com/blog/jaimes-too-soon-tiny-pocket-tank" target="_blank">Fancy Tiger Crafts</a> and <a href="http://www.made-by-rae.com/2015/01/bespoke-double-gauze-blouse/" target="_blank">made by Rae</a>) had created tops out of the material, and these inspired me to do the same. I decided to make my own pattern based upon a favorite batik tank top I wore [deep inhale] more than 20 years ago in high school and as a freshman in college. Amazingly, I could still "wear" the tank before I cut it apart, but only because the upper part of the front of the tank had experienced a rip parallel to the button placket, allowing for "expansion..." This is one of the reasons I liked the shirt so much - I never used the buttons, so a new shirt based on the old one did not need buttons or zippers.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I cut the front and back of the old tank top apart, and folded each in half so that I would have symmetrical pieces when done. I traced outlines of the front and back of the tank on a big piece of paper. Then, I removed the tank top pieces, made some adjustments (increased the armholes; increased the length), and cut out the paper patterns.</div>

I lined up the front and back pieces, and cut them together (except the neck) so the bottom edges and straps matched.<br />

There was enough fabric for me to cut the front and the back so that the bands of color would match when the pieces were assembled. There is enough fabric left over that I want to buy more double gauze to make a super-soft, fluffy quilt for the summer. (!)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjziHI1idypiR_YH6HnOaOCu9W4QNTaNvJCu7NPoJv7EUt_59IZBLmzmGRy74nGGoexvBZy2Yiz7LVBAfzlnLBaRK57AGskhGnHTU_J3Z-qjzyPlc6ERKh91U8oSA24bPZeaCSRC_n-3aY/s1600/20150310_180856.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjziHI1idypiR_YH6HnOaOCu9W4QNTaNvJCu7NPoJv7EUt_59IZBLmzmGRy74nGGoexvBZy2Yiz7LVBAfzlnLBaRK57AGskhGnHTU_J3Z-qjzyPlc6ERKh91U8oSA24bPZeaCSRC_n-3aY/s1600/20150310_180856.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
As suggested in the Bespoke video mentioned above, I used very wide allowances (about 3/4" -1") to minimize issues with the double gauze unraveling and causing chaos while trying to sew. It worked- and I didn't even need to iron anything. I just double-folded and pinned armholes, the neckline, and the bottom seam, and then sewed them up:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVryHELX9Qhk1McoiIjXZvUXQw4RvIP-dPAl6fBQDbsDHPYA4TTMdY3sI5KQkUMjdi-BrGT1mW4N4S5c04-ivNaJQ2aK1LIuNy0BIZ-_viUdjkEZmIexVFVkEJhIdj4Yf5wMC_hFYKM4I/s1600/20150310_191341.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVryHELX9Qhk1McoiIjXZvUXQw4RvIP-dPAl6fBQDbsDHPYA4TTMdY3sI5KQkUMjdi-BrGT1mW4N4S5c04-ivNaJQ2aK1LIuNy0BIZ-_viUdjkEZmIexVFVkEJhIdj4Yf5wMC_hFYKM4I/s1600/20150310_191341.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
I used <a href="http://www.craftsy.com/blog/2013/05/seam-series-how-to-sew-a-french-seam/" target="_blank">french seams</a> to complete the side seams and the straps. Again, no ironing needed.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcRvnZl_5LBn9rUwTZFqwkDdJqwp_RXqnb1piQtXHUvup8UVdQXFUdeBI67d2D2igwgj-PvozGYuS3CDLt4LvzkzQQlMrOzPeWW0yPQsM8imTIlTWB6S8Pkhhw6ofoflDplHE-ISLDrnI/s1600/20150311_195846.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcRvnZl_5LBn9rUwTZFqwkDdJqwp_RXqnb1piQtXHUvup8UVdQXFUdeBI67d2D2igwgj-PvozGYuS3CDLt4LvzkzQQlMrOzPeWW0yPQsM8imTIlTWB6S8Pkhhw6ofoflDplHE-ISLDrnI/s1600/20150311_195846.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
It took a little finagling to get the armholes adjusted, get the side seams right, etc.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNlH4T7fawyM7hjlizkSFfwR1LSsjVvFvlkpeZd2RO4W6xaFizJXxEIfG2o9sM5X9fZiIslrvjUutFMhyphenhyphenSqXW9gKC4xbjrRGVQw5EkvhcjRtLG-EchpPIUqg0NRIaTgq3zdSt7lvZfkb0/s1600/20150310_181644.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNlH4T7fawyM7hjlizkSFfwR1LSsjVvFvlkpeZd2RO4W6xaFizJXxEIfG2o9sM5X9fZiIslrvjUutFMhyphenhyphenSqXW9gKC4xbjrRGVQw5EkvhcjRtLG-EchpPIUqg0NRIaTgq3zdSt7lvZfkb0/s1600/20150310_181644.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>

In the end, it seemed like something was missing. The little stars in the pattern of the fabric inspired me to decorate the collar with a star-chain embroidery stitch available on my machine:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhv_ZL3RftZGMQx1VXYRxIYSMuLORa7jpSTviEA3YUPtptj81SDY-g2wVAu4Dqm1y4fJ1Fj3c1oXpQBT8QxqjG67lds_N1DyvktV3_z7l9GwsyPSwIWkH-JdtKhLg4D7ydfBHH-1sOahBI/s1600/20150311_195148.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhv_ZL3RftZGMQx1VXYRxIYSMuLORa7jpSTviEA3YUPtptj81SDY-g2wVAu4Dqm1y4fJ1Fj3c1oXpQBT8QxqjG67lds_N1DyvktV3_z7l9GwsyPSwIWkH-JdtKhLg4D7ydfBHH-1sOahBI/s1600/20150311_195148.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
And voila! A tank top ready to wear in the spring weather, whenever it decides to show up.<br />

It has been incredibly warm the last few days (50-60 F) compared to our standard fare of the last couple of months (two weeks ago I distinctly remember thinking - wow, it's warm out here, it's 22 F outside!). Still, we're not quite at the gauzy tank top stage yet. Maybe with a cardigan.<br />

E blocks for winter version of Aspen GlowYou can be most of the way through making blocks for a quilt in November, and then not get anything else done until late Feb/early March.<br />
<br />
So, here are the "E" blocks, finally!...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjl8MlxV4kV6p8gpxjY9gzZLWqEvAtvCZ2W4YUTQx0ML0fpJpVBDLrZ1dVbcjTUNAuHunmlHrAl8uEU8Q6DfCKBgqpwvPnWlNVmDs3pxyxkzf0A8FqiFNnn47una2ZaKqL8ggV4rmTEC0c/s1600/20150228_114526.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjl8MlxV4kV6p8gpxjY9gzZLWqEvAtvCZ2W4YUTQx0ML0fpJpVBDLrZ1dVbcjTUNAuHunmlHrAl8uEU8Q6DfCKBgqpwvPnWlNVmDs3pxyxkzf0A8FqiFNnn47una2ZaKqL8ggV4rmTEC0c/s1600/20150228_114526.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
...and here are ALL the blocks for this Queen-sized quilt:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3WrhBQaVjBaVZV0rzb0nbxeWIKqQsua-VT375lBMqPh_EnfTVYCKo0_k3_SNG4pUZJBFUs3ZuWoNSDhcMGm5apiJ2XW8by_F-hZUu1CICCvIG1F5UXQ4t072pS8JmfpNlvt57IVPKS-g/s1600/20150228_115529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3WrhBQaVjBaVZV0rzb0nbxeWIKqQsua-VT375lBMqPh_EnfTVYCKo0_k3_SNG4pUZJBFUs3ZuWoNSDhcMGm5apiJ2XW8by_F-hZUu1CICCvIG1F5UXQ4t072pS8JmfpNlvt57IVPKS-g/s1600/20150228_115529.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
I have to say, after making so many of these tiny pointy-blocks for this quilt, I will probably try to avoid doing something so monotonous and tiny ever again.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBxcjZnAZicGMZDpMtPXqaLr9X2Zptsa6PEoCcafRhmk96La4TUpepdkDnEUtpQuDS_HtKmpmFQfDQtiQQPxPxUap3UG_fCTtZo1DDlU3ydIpsicnf6P_qv_un0PjN2-AFKBosQ7vyx0s/s1600/20150228_115618.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBxcjZnAZicGMZDpMtPXqaLr9X2Zptsa6PEoCcafRhmk96La4TUpepdkDnEUtpQuDS_HtKmpmFQfDQtiQQPxPxUap3UG_fCTtZo1DDlU3ydIpsicnf6P_qv_un0PjN2-AFKBosQ7vyx0s/s1600/20150228_115618.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
I did start to piece everything together. One of my blocks with the white center is arranged above. I had the idea of making the background fabric a bit darker than t<a href="http://www.craftsy.com/pattern/quilting/home-decor/aspen-glow-1305/66883" target="_blank">he original pattern</a>, and changing some of the red centers to white, to make the quilt look more snowflaky. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQ0lWbipqEVJW2CTQ4wTsvfEqrIgV1q091TkJs06PDWtU5eDMn2En5neT55_dPA4baPdBYfGX_3qWqbXKXiymoRHiC1PrhoHs9_P1QEwfVyvfM-IW-pyoKWumxuA72Es2d9nBSnVy4QcI/s1600/20150301_221229.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQ0lWbipqEVJW2CTQ4wTsvfEqrIgV1q091TkJs06PDWtU5eDMn2En5neT55_dPA4baPdBYfGX_3qWqbXKXiymoRHiC1PrhoHs9_P1QEwfVyvfM-IW-pyoKWumxuA72Es2d9nBSnVy4QcI/s1600/20150301_221229.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a></div>
<br />
Note: I started this quilt in the early Fall, before Snowmaggeddon II
this winter. I really don't need any more snowflakes at this point! Here's the latest batch of real snow from today: 6.5"<br />

As you might be able to tell, it's not very spring-like here right now. We had 6-8 inches of wet, heavy snow on Wednesday, right before Thanksgiving. Finished with E blocks for Spring versionFinally, the last blocks for the Spring version of the Aspen Glow quilt are done!:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC_0kXlmvTDgYeRi-xDSobFE1yvP98hqxqaCPBqIBFSdregJ0yH1o7J3erKGe4bUrOHYmsHc6SJ0RMg1OOG63OjVRmt8gAVtJFfmTgBlzb8s0CuGmPnZOgfWSbtBmbASo7kKv3SqzVnkA/s1600/IMAG0872.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC_0kXlmvTDgYeRi-xDSobFE1yvP98hqxqaCPBqIBFSdregJ0yH1o7J3erKGe4bUrOHYmsHc6SJ0RMg1OOG63OjVRmt8gAVtJFfmTgBlzb8s0CuGmPnZOgfWSbtBmbASo7kKv3SqzVnkA/s1600/IMAG0872.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I am looking forward to starting to piece the larger blocks together. I really don't know how this quilt will look when I'm done. It is going to be scrappier than the original pattern, because I used a fat eighth bundle for this one. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYDXOPPc6vGp_xsbI979P7CBvJEP3fXxEdp-K_s_v7ejRBwJ6S_oPK2fngk7ws8MiRzOKFvcs2x8N7jegyqXxzcBIVb2zBhFJNsfg2FDGG04h4pdIH6TNv0QRHwMTYorzzG1MN1i97PAo/s1600/IMAG0870.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYDXOPPc6vGp_xsbI979P7CBvJEP3fXxEdp-K_s_v7ejRBwJ6S_oPK2fngk7ws8MiRzOKFvcs2x8N7jegyqXxzcBIVb2zBhFJNsfg2FDGG04h4pdIH6TNv0QRHwMTYorzzG1MN1i97PAo/s1600/IMAG0870.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
I've never made flying geese before. I like how they look when I chain piece them. I don't like the trimming involved with these blocks, but it seems necessary to keep from getting too wonky.Catniphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14740177994502022430noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1610588365749164286.post-80689297056764599422014-10-26T21:23:00.002-04:002014-10-26T21:24:55.705-04:00Finally! Blocks C and D for the Winter version of Aspen GlowWell, it took a while longer than I expected (sort of) to complete the next round of blocks for the <a href="http://www.corasquilts.com/p/aspen-glow.html" target="_blank">Aspen Glow Quilt-along</a>, but here they are:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZAcX8uppdSnqPRpJ0ds139Br4Jgm3RwgZznsFir4PaZ721EFEeyuMSgYAS4bYFNUOVHWyXv-Uviw9sIMcYTV1wxr2Rya2m9F_f3034_T0UhMnUybva1b_LuczHeqcN8JGwlasB7pVLUM/s1600/DSCN9055.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZAcX8uppdSnqPRpJ0ds139Br4Jgm3RwgZznsFir4PaZ721EFEeyuMSgYAS4bYFNUOVHWyXv-Uviw9sIMcYTV1wxr2Rya2m9F_f3034_T0UhMnUybva1b_LuczHeqcN8JGwlasB7pVLUM/s1600/DSCN9055.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrsZ_ga9nB8V2hmuRFvEh-XKl0ZBQHZWjyDko8sNSBSTul4YqSxdor8slqD3T83BYCZ1o6Q16OIl4SywkuNpvd2J78cNzNFEJI6BeqYfB0r8Kei0FCSQwJHu63M7yTU2G7Bq73Up4DCHQ/s1600/DSCN9052.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrsZ_ga9nB8V2hmuRFvEh-XKl0ZBQHZWjyDko8sNSBSTul4YqSxdor8slqD3T83BYCZ1o6Q16OIl4SywkuNpvd2J78cNzNFEJI6BeqYfB0r8Kei0FCSQwJHu63M7yTU2G7Bq73Up4DCHQ/s1600/DSCN9052.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZAcX8uppdSnqPRpJ0ds139Br4Jgm3RwgZznsFir4PaZ721EFEeyuMSgYAS4bYFNUOVHWyXv-Uviw9sIMcYTV1wxr2Rya2m9F_f3034_T0UhMnUybva1b_LuczHeqcN8JGwlasB7pVLUM/s1600/DSCN9055.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The C blocks took a really, really long time to get through. Between selling a house, having two birthdays in the family, and a round of tests and subsequent grading at work, it just seemed like they were never going to end! The D blocks (squares) were a lot easier to plow through in a spare moment.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I am going to switch back to my spring quilt to make the pointy E blocks. That one is only twin-sized, so it is always goes much faster.</div>

I'm submitting my Wonky Star quilt. The original blog post on making this quilt is <a href="http://flukelane.blogspot.com/2014/08/wonky-star-quilt.html" target="_blank">here</a>. I bought the fabric in Minnesota after we drove there from Virginia on a family trip. My husband and I left the teenagers at the Mall of America with aunts and uncles, and took off to look for some interesting rocks an hour west of town. We promptly ran over a huge metal bracket left in the middle of the highway (ah, construction season in Minneapolis) and ripped all four tires to shreds. After pulling off into a hotel parking lot, then an impromptu purchase and installation of all new tires, we started on our way, again.<br />
<br />
We did find the quarry with some of North America's oldest rocks. On the way back, we stopped by a quilt store and I bought some charm packs of PB&J. <br />
<br />
There are some other fabrics in the quilt. One of the red ones was found in my grandparents' house shortly after they died. My grandmother always loved the color red, so it's a nice reminder of her. I bought the backing fabric on an earlier non-vacation trip, the night before I gave a presentation to almost 300 people in Newport News, VA. It was an incredibly important point in my career - the research ideas I was lecturing about got me tenure. So, this quilt reminds me of a lot of different things that happened in my life.<br />

I'm doing this version in queen-size, and produced a giant pile of blocks during sewing! This is one of the only times there wasn't a cat sitting on them as well.<br />
<br />
So far I've only done mint blocks, so it will be neat to start in on the other fabrics for the next set of blocks.Catniphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14740177994502022430noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1610588365749164286.post-39068336388054723512014-09-20T21:31:00.001-04:002014-09-20T21:41:00.780-04:00Blocks C1 and C2 for the Spring version of Aspen GlowIt took all day (in between doing other things), but I finished the C blocks for the twin-sized Aspen Glow quilt I'm making using Bluebird Park:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The completed blocks. I'm using the Autumn setting for this quilt, so I actually do have a C1 and C2 version of the block. All of the ones visible in this picture are C1 (green on the bottom). The C2 blocks have yellow patterns on the bottom.Catniphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14740177994502022430noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1610588365749164286.post-37139259178579661562014-09-14T21:42:00.000-04:002014-09-14T22:36:46.030-04:00Block A for Winter and Block B for Spring: Aspen Glow patternAfter I got the flu shot and then promptly came down with a bad head cold for a week, I finally felt well enough today to get a little piecing done for the <a href="http://www.corasquilts.com/" target="_blank">Aspen Glow quilt along</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwqxyXhiSAXqHWP0yl5CWvKe6dHKtxVkHa-T1n7KJ9uCypVv4iyyVqmBAJaF5uWIQ5GNABKZbUSghjMTLMy8x3nXru7dKRLLkkJKH2-yNtZFCCjgPkJscKzg_GWeij1ZLrwjA635DUd7A/s1600/DSCN8997.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwqxyXhiSAXqHWP0yl5CWvKe6dHKtxVkHa-T1n7KJ9uCypVv4iyyVqmBAJaF5uWIQ5GNABKZbUSghjMTLMy8x3nXru7dKRLLkkJKH2-yNtZFCCjgPkJscKzg_GWeij1ZLrwjA635DUd7A/s1600/DSCN8997.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
These are blocks A for the large (queen-sized) winter version of the quilt. I really like the background color I'm using for this one. It's light stone gray, but to me it looks like the color of my morning coffee, which is actually half coffee and half creamer. The mint pattern is from Winter's Lane.<br />
<br />
I also sewed through block B for the spring version (it's actually the autumn pattern, but I'm making it with the spring-y fabrics of Bluebird Park.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I had to use the flash on this one- it is getting darker earlier and earlier every day. :( At least the weather has decided to cool down to something more appropriate for September.<br />

There is a little bit more time here in September before things just become totally crazy with my job, so I went ahead and finished Block A for this quilt:<br />

It's my first quilt along ever (cyber or real).<br />
<br />
These Bluebird Park fat eighths have been sitting around in my stash for a while, so when I saw there was a quilt pattern using Kate and Birdie Paper Co fabrics, I thought, "hey I should make that and I can use these." <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLfIrOHfcXL-BefKUisWQ97pJyb37iOYUX3XjvCAL6BM223jLLbJisdvyJShUYF6UnuDkCln_LUQgy_mN_8-LQSm57793iiCTBoOt_jrhgUleCzWTgU4ApB8mqXLpWN6i3liz-EpcYsn4/s1600/DSCN8895.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLfIrOHfcXL-BefKUisWQ97pJyb37iOYUX3XjvCAL6BM223jLLbJisdvyJShUYF6UnuDkCln_LUQgy_mN_8-LQSm57793iiCTBoOt_jrhgUleCzWTgU4ApB8mqXLpWN6i3liz-EpcYsn4/s1600/DSCN8895.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
This picture was actually taken a week ago- I finished cutting these into pieces for a lap quilt, though I am still working on the many little pieces of white fabric.<br />
<br />
Believe it or not, I have ambitions of completing a second Aspen Glow quilt for our queen bed. This does not mean that the quilt will cover the entire bed, because DH is sort of like a spaghetti spoon in bed and twirls everything - sheets, quilts, sometimes cats- around him as he tosses and turns at night. But, I can certainly use it if this winter was anything like last winter.<br />
<br />
So, here is the general idea for the fabrics for the second quilt. Some Winter's Lane, a plaid called Honky Tonk Chili Pepper Campfire Coffee (!) by Moda, taupe fabric from the local quilt store for the background. I'm probably not using the gray with white flowers for this one- but it works as a stand-in until the real fabric arrives.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBPriFssmeyxAgmUdMPPDHQSQAhKoTIncRPpio3C1Iu_9xNtjRBxwIQaXwOaK6hUZiYvIhHa5WSSS03GDT3L4ofYcuH5anIIzO6Ft1DjjN19ijAgZ5tqiYkyG7xrSRqP-iVlPgjqv9fW0/s1600/DSCN8888.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBPriFssmeyxAgmUdMPPDHQSQAhKoTIncRPpio3C1Iu_9xNtjRBxwIQaXwOaK6hUZiYvIhHa5WSSS03GDT3L4ofYcuH5anIIzO6Ft1DjjN19ijAgZ5tqiYkyG7xrSRqP-iVlPgjqv9fW0/s1600/DSCN8888.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
I wanted something similar to the color choices in the winter color-way as described in the<a href="http://www.craftsy.com/pattern/quilting/home-decor/aspen-glow-1305/66883" target="_blank"> pattern instructions</a>. It should match the bedroom wall color, and I just like the mint, red, and white together. One of my favorite color combinations.<br />
<br />
I look forward to seeing what others choose for their fabrics! <br />

The wonky star quilt took nearly a year of fiddling, procrastinating, and finally quilting for me to complete. It is beautiful and I already love cuddling with it (and usually a cat).<br />
<br />
And then I saw this Goodnight Moon fabric on sale online, and when it got to my house I made a complete quilt out of it in three days. Three days! If inspiration would always hit so quickly. (Maybe not- I can't really afford to make a quilt every three days).<br />
<br />
I love Goodnight Moon. This was required, repeated reading in the house growing up, and since I was the oldest of four kids, I did my share of reading it to the younger kids. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2SnvtedH60ALMzwSgFf6LKphNKVdmwQx48PNhHV3Y66EFXVLMYZFenNg93-l5X5hNf-KLbzH1xppmwqQ3LoOwac276FWWicFhJlihuPadb6mFKwzzLq3jdL1fl9KAuF7eyFQm0dNcy4Y/s1600/DSCN8837.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2SnvtedH60ALMzwSgFf6LKphNKVdmwQx48PNhHV3Y66EFXVLMYZFenNg93-l5X5hNf-KLbzH1xppmwqQ3LoOwac276FWWicFhJlihuPadb6mFKwzzLq3jdL1fl9KAuF7eyFQm0dNcy4Y/s1600/DSCN8837.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
There were actually these panels for sale, which are from Quilting Treasures, and also some organic fabric with Goodnight Moon patterns from Cloud 9 was on sale.<br />
<br />
I didn't follow a pattern. I cut out the individual panels and then made borders around each one so that they came out to be all the same size. Originally, two panels were smaller than the others.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHEbmgCVkmbPMMP-n7qgca6JK2NCIxtNguDvIm0uqayguz5KzXkP_jFnpWReMLDKjv_7KPKD0R5yOgUk7IVGmJZEntQIsae2bQ3QitOis2qetzpaIyfNcsxRlhvmYx2Cgf8cAmNMo4t0Y/s1600/DSCN8839.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHEbmgCVkmbPMMP-n7qgca6JK2NCIxtNguDvIm0uqayguz5KzXkP_jFnpWReMLDKjv_7KPKD0R5yOgUk7IVGmJZEntQIsae2bQ3QitOis2qetzpaIyfNcsxRlhvmYx2Cgf8cAmNMo4t0Y/s1600/DSCN8839.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSLjFQ_glCbUpr2HDd20K_ZWAZIp8c4nmYwXWg5dZmKc3iP8JmpIgOwW-NLiqFktvDhr9iimiLfzng8Sqco18KwnYf3XE2_HKXHjGVLaR35qGu_pQ012XwrmstAFT4rbedLrm-dz57AOM/s1600/DSCN8841.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSLjFQ_glCbUpr2HDd20K_ZWAZIp8c4nmYwXWg5dZmKc3iP8JmpIgOwW-NLiqFktvDhr9iimiLfzng8Sqco18KwnYf3XE2_HKXHjGVLaR35qGu_pQ012XwrmstAFT4rbedLrm-dz57AOM/s1600/DSCN8841.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I decided to use the rest of the fabric in what I guess you could call a three-patch pattern - one long rectangular block paired with two square blocks to create a larger square. I included some white blocks in there to stretch the Goodnight Moon fabric farther, but also to break up the rich primary colors of the fabric, as inspired by the book.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9pRBOTF3Ix6U2CMmPdO6J2WkJCnOEXzQ5HaL6YRRNLN7AglQLA6LnJfonl9aYLXF0THnqBuqGSdVpidNvxOj_Xd1te9G9wlsj4poBR5D5qKQ3ivC-JVnw_suNCM0mVN-mLHe8sJnu9mY/s1600/DSCN8845.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9pRBOTF3Ix6U2CMmPdO6J2WkJCnOEXzQ5HaL6YRRNLN7AglQLA6LnJfonl9aYLXF0THnqBuqGSdVpidNvxOj_Xd1te9G9wlsj4poBR5D5qKQ3ivC-JVnw_suNCM0mVN-mLHe8sJnu9mY/s1600/DSCN8845.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Then, put the panels in near the top and sewed it all together.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJKTACsRuVLYHGZl0Xnf09MRf3qmSf5CK5njh9csAf1aKb5IvYlt0iD3rAY228BGoGxZPshrFE6NyQVPVGAjRnPKhisvURNAqVT2EQajwhcKN6DrE1kzFjWi-HVmnsuPKaj1OUj2a98Y4/s1600/DSCN8850.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJKTACsRuVLYHGZl0Xnf09MRf3qmSf5CK5njh9csAf1aKb5IvYlt0iD3rAY228BGoGxZPshrFE6NyQVPVGAjRnPKhisvURNAqVT2EQajwhcKN6DrE1kzFjWi-HVmnsuPKaj1OUj2a98Y4/s1600/DSCN8850.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
I did meandering free-motion quilting, just like on the wonky star quilt. It turned out ok- my Janome machine seems to get choked up on the top thread a bit, though.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9l0sQI2b19baAdsEabfliM3pT8uVvm53hvvCwcDvlLjXqeglC7YApVTfwaOfqC3U3MO77bpDIj3lMbU5rKCpqQ4m4qHNXy7PmKAciPfAzGFvsG1W-EuhWhuss41b7psrgWqN9Wi4zlQg/s1600/DSCN8874.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9l0sQI2b19baAdsEabfliM3pT8uVvm53hvvCwcDvlLjXqeglC7YApVTfwaOfqC3U3MO77bpDIj3lMbU5rKCpqQ4m4qHNXy7PmKAciPfAzGFvsG1W-EuhWhuss41b7psrgWqN9Wi4zlQg/s1600/DSCN8874.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
I did actually remember to save a selvage to make a label this time.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiRAQ-6q_ZkcCyEKeLJrH93FLEarxUjKEr8ltYQQq94y9M9KHkBzJBBLZApozMs-VojVTpUAEArHriYc87Kw7XlfX-Op52PcWSnM7M1F4n-SXdq-_SxEySvWW5qnbaioHryXGvIR2cpFw/s1600/DSCN8854.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiRAQ-6q_ZkcCyEKeLJrH93FLEarxUjKEr8ltYQQq94y9M9KHkBzJBBLZApozMs-VojVTpUAEArHriYc87Kw7XlfX-Op52PcWSnM7M1F4n-SXdq-_SxEySvWW5qnbaioHryXGvIR2cpFw/s1600/DSCN8854.JPG" height="150" width="200" /></a></div>
And the final quilt...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0pI_t2R5qcqCY4XvW7wGk33KL4JNJEf8YJA0CWfDwc294B8jPWuxRZHjpuUbQkgUQlBI1TCCTijVS5CqzV1ylYE8nOToS9-L8Q9k4YygtCBM509P__59uHzgLMsMwAJ1mDaWRyrPU2pE/s1600/DSCN8873.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0pI_t2R5qcqCY4XvW7wGk33KL4JNJEf8YJA0CWfDwc294B8jPWuxRZHjpuUbQkgUQlBI1TCCTijVS5CqzV1ylYE8nOToS9-L8Q9k4YygtCBM509P__59uHzgLMsMwAJ1mDaWRyrPU2pE/s1600/DSCN8873.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Which was immediately taken over to my parents' house and loved on by my mom, my 6-year-old niece, and I'm sure the border collie as well.<br />

This is my wonky star quilt inspired by <a href="http://youtu.be/KDRW0LImKmU" target="_blank">this tutorial</a>, and by <a href="https://flic.kr/p/gE1QRq" target="_blank">this quilt </a>on Flickr, using PB&J charm squares plus some Denyse Schmidt fabrics and one red fabric that belonged to my late Granny.<br />
<br />
This quilt took nearly a year to make. It started on an eventful day about a year ago, when my husband and I left the teenagers at the Mall of America with their aunts and uncles and drove west to see some Archean gneiss in an abandoned quarry.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWBPn2xbjVvfCFmNIzfzGj16JmZPBW1VKj3ojlmp0jmU6cwlt3B68x6vm4jKKwjF8QHVj7T7DKFtjTulGkGHAInjvZ4MtnZNSo1Viuyavn1d658RUd31X0mj5gUcLms7ihv9PwcEYzg_U/s1600/DSCN8252.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWBPn2xbjVvfCFmNIzfzGj16JmZPBW1VKj3ojlmp0jmU6cwlt3B68x6vm4jKKwjF8QHVj7T7DKFtjTulGkGHAInjvZ4MtnZNSo1Viuyavn1d658RUd31X0mj5gUcLms7ihv9PwcEYzg_U/s1600/DSCN8252.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
No, I will not spare you from pictures of rocks. Actually, we only got a couple of miles down the road before we hit a huge piece of metal on the highway in Minneapolis and ripped our tires to shreds. So first, we had new tires installed on the car. Then we went to the quarry.<br />
<br />
On the way back, we stopped at this cute quilt shop, and this is where I found the PB&J charm packs.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjal59eNHFUe-Ir5stU-Z6MdFgtrQLvq_iWDBShnLcWmK3EbB2LsyAgVOM4D6QNEvToRUm2CehnazxwyOtvzwaj8rO9VdN8WuOyRRbmYwtgwlVjbuWDDFyB40Db_EJPIFLHxMawkFM8JQI/s1600/IMG_20130810_150046.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjal59eNHFUe-Ir5stU-Z6MdFgtrQLvq_iWDBShnLcWmK3EbB2LsyAgVOM4D6QNEvToRUm2CehnazxwyOtvzwaj8rO9VdN8WuOyRRbmYwtgwlVjbuWDDFyB40Db_EJPIFLHxMawkFM8JQI/s1600/IMG_20130810_150046.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
I had seen wonky stars in various places on the internets, but it took me a bit to come up with a design.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrpa7YsNWtE8r5NVKS3ZM-G02Zr1KzrBrNWMr8avuGNCPEEJkvH6FtO5d6LOBGhTdKp5E6wpPIkeMmg8XacLGkEJslK0G3OAL1Px92J7znQWq-ObmGr_lWVpA-cxd9N1Pg4r2UTMyK3A8/s1600/20131012_220617.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi43LPAnPbSDg4mD1MHt7zBlqvb9yryXctmgsIjOrADbitWC5EUlwPwSS06BYtAPmwARZj40S33Ghokwc_sRqP7ZvMDDH9iss1SKLzUifpc4_UiDbCGYMF7DIrsw1YviLw_ZE7sjRW94xE/s1600/20130901_133948.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi43LPAnPbSDg4mD1MHt7zBlqvb9yryXctmgsIjOrADbitWC5EUlwPwSS06BYtAPmwARZj40S33Ghokwc_sRqP7ZvMDDH9iss1SKLzUifpc4_UiDbCGYMF7DIrsw1YviLw_ZE7sjRW94xE/s1600/20130901_133948.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidsCrH8UhwemRkIcvGxwEuAFG0MymaDYhaDMIIIPR-piSdTSgS79lRxwouPFRmP8lRubLv87cGZQyC57y6cTGr1secX9TOUIYy2Dn5_LGKK-IyP5EkfYPgjbmXWyhFA_BsiLK4EctsAto/s1600/20130827_203911.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidsCrH8UhwemRkIcvGxwEuAFG0MymaDYhaDMIIIPR-piSdTSgS79lRxwouPFRmP8lRubLv87cGZQyC57y6cTGr1secX9TOUIYy2Dn5_LGKK-IyP5EkfYPgjbmXWyhFA_BsiLK4EctsAto/s1600/20130827_203911.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
I started with the idea of having lattices surrounding the squares, but I liked the stars so much I didn't want to detract from them. So then I was left with this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrpa7YsNWtE8r5NVKS3ZM-G02Zr1KzrBrNWMr8avuGNCPEEJkvH6FtO5d6LOBGhTdKp5E6wpPIkeMmg8XacLGkEJslK0G3OAL1Px92J7znQWq-ObmGr_lWVpA-cxd9N1Pg4r2UTMyK3A8/s1600/20131012_220617.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrpa7YsNWtE8r5NVKS3ZM-G02Zr1KzrBrNWMr8avuGNCPEEJkvH6FtO5d6LOBGhTdKp5E6wpPIkeMmg8XacLGkEJslK0G3OAL1Px92J7znQWq-ObmGr_lWVpA-cxd9N1Pg4r2UTMyK3A8/s1600/20131012_220617.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Which didn't have enough color for me. Lucky are those people who can actually have mostly-white quilts- I don't think one would stay pristine in my house for very long. Also, this was meant as a lap quilt, and this was not nearly enough stars. So, I started adding reversed stars and smaller stars, and rearranged and rearranged...<br />

<br />
And the result, unquilted:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

And quilted:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
This is the first time I tried quilting in a meandering pattern- ie, not straight-line quilting.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Woohoo! This one is a lap quilt for me. I am not looking forward to winter after the last one, but at least I can cuddle under this in my armchair in front of the fire.Catniphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14740177994502022430noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1610588365749164286.post-29715541987082234102014-01-23T20:39:00.002-05:002014-01-23T20:39:41.147-05:00November XOXO QuiltOk, so it's been 6 months since my last blog post. Time flies when you're applying for tenure, teaching, taking care of various people. I actually have accomplished some quilting during this time.<br />
<br />
This first quilt I made over the course of about a couple of weeks in November. Our friend and neighbor was hospitalized, so I made a quilt for him so he could stay warm in his easy chair in between medical treatments. <br />
<br />
Here is the final result:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7cfzwS2OyCDTF9HRHkdEArWedWJ5Pm77XvSRtqCV2g1d4ZhTZSQ4s_X4TmkVP-AGtu9gNdvjWXrty7tvMQQtLbBIzBvth1zOMfmt4Wl8bNcICbNJNfGL9GLuek8OL7yQQGBhJ4o6Ag_k/s1600/DSCN8381.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7cfzwS2OyCDTF9HRHkdEArWedWJ5Pm77XvSRtqCV2g1d4ZhTZSQ4s_X4TmkVP-AGtu9gNdvjWXrty7tvMQQtLbBIzBvth1zOMfmt4Wl8bNcICbNJNfGL9GLuek8OL7yQQGBhJ4o6Ag_k/s1600/DSCN8381.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
This was an easy quilt to piece. It just has one block! I had seen similar quilts online, so I just figured out how to make the block by looking at pictures. However, there is a nice <a href="http://quiltingtutorials.com/all/xs-os-quilt-block-easy-quilting-tutorials/" target="_blank">video tutorial</a> from the Missouri Star Quilt Company that explains how to make this type of quilt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTWy8t8h17GMC5bJOjcYPih2Y-ylcPwf8EM0rpVDhEostahahZTEFNtF_i8Qh3gwT-oP8iOHZI9uoBtrvoF-JI94sTqbeEsfCbV6zH3iIhG8ZOHJ4jcRWQkdviUXxGKIHK3C1oRDvz6wo/s1600/20131114_205521.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTWy8t8h17GMC5bJOjcYPih2Y-ylcPwf8EM0rpVDhEostahahZTEFNtF_i8Qh3gwT-oP8iOHZI9uoBtrvoF-JI94sTqbeEsfCbV6zH3iIhG8ZOHJ4jcRWQkdviUXxGKIHK3C1oRDvz6wo/s1600/20131114_205521.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Each block takes one 5" square and two 2.5" squares that match each other. This is great for using up (a small portion of) the scrap bin.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYKGPLL7QGiYddVA26a7AaVViPm6digQu5jLFsYMNq7Af9gYK6qFz285bauS1wsIkIWSgVrV5RsXOjez3MxKCyQelipr0WdzfDqY3OSaN57WknX65nNDOFVljERCGO0NUTPi9tSAE1WPg/s1600/20131116_232105.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYKGPLL7QGiYddVA26a7AaVViPm6digQu5jLFsYMNq7Af9gYK6qFz285bauS1wsIkIWSgVrV5RsXOjez3MxKCyQelipr0WdzfDqY3OSaN57WknX65nNDOFVljERCGO0NUTPi9tSAE1WPg/s1600/20131116_232105.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I was not quite so fastidious as the quilting video method- I simply lined up the 2.5" squares with the corners of the 5" squares and sewed - no pre-ironed creases.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEha-YcQ77BDa6GSwtZQRdA4ObQ0Zkg5KX-lfKm4Amu4vq71Y1BPxBB-KAh4Lo03-FqMFH3AzalyYeOhAO3DKVKd-gxk6Ph7c8gwZ6CHI8p0x18FudUUrdpirWw4Rj85pyBmN1dUnyBezgo/s1600/20131117_233034.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEha-YcQ77BDa6GSwtZQRdA4ObQ0Zkg5KX-lfKm4Amu4vq71Y1BPxBB-KAh4Lo03-FqMFH3AzalyYeOhAO3DKVKd-gxk6Ph7c8gwZ6CHI8p0x18FudUUrdpirWw4Rj85pyBmN1dUnyBezgo/s1600/20131117_233034.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
It took a lot of rearranging to figure out where to place the light and dark X's and O's. At first, I arranged the X's and O's in a linear fashion like a tic-tac-toe board, but it just didn't look right with this scrappy quilt. So, I offset the rows.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7Bl3AnAtdNbdkmthOwDE4hi9lEWSv_PpANhw7quHqEqM1oijV4LIy0rL9dnDKjaU1u8A2iAEegYgBc1eiuY0Qemogy8SdVvG50a_0wsC2zjaD9CDj7k1VBTZbHY9VnWFiL2sGbyUuKh8/s1600/DSCN8382.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7Bl3AnAtdNbdkmthOwDE4hi9lEWSv_PpANhw7quHqEqM1oijV4LIy0rL9dnDKjaU1u8A2iAEegYgBc1eiuY0Qemogy8SdVvG50a_0wsC2zjaD9CDj7k1VBTZbHY9VnWFiL2sGbyUuKh8/s1600/DSCN8382.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />The back ended up looking somewhat scenic with some trees and a swath of blue fabric from the local Gift n' Thrift. I kept the quilting very simple because I'm still not very good at it, and I had very little time to get this done.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg70Qeo87hPSwCNaXTbSlQ4id3fSr6uGljGi3x2VXHLXXaZBOY8K-KFwojG6C3TwpUOoEMwSbCdN-ryR_D7AeEcLmoxqtKRayhBUfrx5iQRMctmaQNFnvl-qz_2M5uNRLrLUghDVhRaIuk/s1600/DSCN8378.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg70Qeo87hPSwCNaXTbSlQ4id3fSr6uGljGi3x2VXHLXXaZBOY8K-KFwojG6C3TwpUOoEMwSbCdN-ryR_D7AeEcLmoxqtKRayhBUfrx5iQRMctmaQNFnvl-qz_2M5uNRLrLUghDVhRaIuk/s1600/DSCN8378.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Woohoo! Washed and ready to go.<br />

<br />
Zucchini mania is in full swing. I will refrain from posting pictures of piles of zucchini on my countertops. Yellow squash are the same- in fact, they seem to be winning the "no one wants them, even if you are giving them away" award this year.<br />
<br />
The carrots are done! They are not that sweet, but handy internet research tells me that it is way tooo hot for sweet carrots.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

A tour of the garden: some extra zucchini plants next to remaining onions and what were supposed to be garlic but instead are leeks (thanks Burpee :( ) </div>

What to do with leftover Glimma charm squares from the last quilt I made?<br />

I love this fabric, and I wanted to make something with it that I would be able to use and enjoy.<br />
<br />
My "quilt inspector" cat is also a "yoga mat inspector." She managed to "try out" my yoga mat within 5 minutes of me bringing it home this summer (the yoga mat usually stays in my office, but the building is being renovated this summer).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
So, it seemed like a good idea to make a nice hoagie-shaped bag for my yoga mat and towel to prevent further "inspection."<br />
<br />
This is the first project for me using my new Janome sewing machine (DC2012 on sale!)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-N_ITFGAlPzdfuT1-s6uwc2HURu7zr2fmov0YvpCqD4K4YdhxIaKSR0qMeuLCZ8Ylk2eGJVq4AP2uIA8o2LMf1lTFj61ILInJYQWf99Xye37tv12EL-9lOOFzXqd9ebAsXSqPg32VHGI/s1600/DSCN8083.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-N_ITFGAlPzdfuT1-s6uwc2HURu7zr2fmov0YvpCqD4K4YdhxIaKSR0qMeuLCZ8Ylk2eGJVq4AP2uIA8o2LMf1lTFj61ILInJYQWf99Xye37tv12EL-9lOOFzXqd9ebAsXSqPg32VHGI/s320/DSCN8083.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I did not use a pattern to make the bag, but I was inspired by <a href="http://jgirldesigns.blogspot.com/2013/02/yoga-bag-tutorial.html" target="_blank">Jane's Girl Designs Tutorial</a> based on an <a href="http://www.amybutlerdesign.com/pdfs/NigellaYogaBag.pdf" target="_blank">Amy Butler</a> pattern.<br />
<br />
I started by measuring the length of my loosely-rolled yoga mat. Then, I added a few inches to the length to get the length of the bag because I wanted a little extra room in there for a yoga towel and maybe a water bottle.<br />
<br />
For the bag ends, I just went around the house looking for circular templates that were bigger then the loosely-rolled end of my yoga mat, but not too big. I found a small mixing bowl that worked, and used it to trace circles on the blue solid Glimma fabric for the ends of the bag.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqXUzfoqX8laI0vR6ahqZEyXbPlV3ITDu4_dhAyfF0zqbeC-S71ZKkzGpSWrEpthNKMHakLecmOmLqL7Q08j45s_hyPSiPxMI3-LMaLLhYGsojxsMrYDroKq8SWx0SiM0KPsoA2SohuJA/s1600/DSCN8063.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqXUzfoqX8laI0vR6ahqZEyXbPlV3ITDu4_dhAyfF0zqbeC-S71ZKkzGpSWrEpthNKMHakLecmOmLqL7Q08j45s_hyPSiPxMI3-LMaLLhYGsojxsMrYDroKq8SWx0SiM0KPsoA2SohuJA/s320/DSCN8063.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I decided I wanted to do a quilt-as-you go bag because I wanted to try quilting on my new machine, and because I thought the bag needed some reinforcement beyond normal quilting cotton fabric. You can see in the picture above that I also cut circles of the yellow lining fabric and batting circles at the same time. I cut the blue and yellow fabrics about 1/4" wider than the original circle, so that I could sew the ends to the sides of the bag later. Then I quilted each of these circles.<br />
<br />
The sides came together from my remaining Glimma squares and some extra blue fabric.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4JcsggGLAlcsE_TPKCqogl-BnDebPC3Ykml0SE6K1mJD5MLyGdFevP495Lfp4pL5D7xCbHhSLMxr_MvhN4ufZnaq-MXT-L_y-GTrQyI6uvCGiiZm9JLAxBMHCjOr1O1FURVNX7F0yUO8/s1600/DSCN8061.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4JcsggGLAlcsE_TPKCqogl-BnDebPC3Ykml0SE6K1mJD5MLyGdFevP495Lfp4pL5D7xCbHhSLMxr_MvhN4ufZnaq-MXT-L_y-GTrQyI6uvCGiiZm9JLAxBMHCjOr1O1FURVNX7F0yUO8/s320/DSCN8061.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I made two rectangle-shaped sandwiches of Glimma, batting, and lining fabric- one for each side of the zipper in the top of the bag. I quilted each of these as well. I made sure the rectangles were wide enough so that when put together they would have plenty of overlap around the circumference of the bag (ie, I could cut the extra material away when I sewed them together).<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDzAWfDLvYQbjUUEkt7I9noChAwqly9K1QwHH_AuY9tYGK3MKbttj360zLnyqGH-W2HYPnxAATcGTDJOnvrBLRmEKfEA7Mx1qmIgy_7pFj1lcB6dvl63Gl1H-pttGd-W4iVMM5M5P8uzc/s1600/DSCN8067.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDzAWfDLvYQbjUUEkt7I9noChAwqly9K1QwHH_AuY9tYGK3MKbttj360zLnyqGH-W2HYPnxAATcGTDJOnvrBLRmEKfEA7Mx1qmIgy_7pFj1lcB6dvl63Gl1H-pttGd-W4iVMM5M5P8uzc/s320/DSCN8067.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I basted the two rectangles together on one side, and then installed a 24" zipper in the basted side, like I was sewing a zipper into a dress (see <a href="http://www.makeit-loveit.com/2011/10/sewing-tips-installing-a-basic-zipper.html" target="_blank">this cool tutorial</a> by Make it & Love it for instructions).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMCJCd8b2TozbVIe48NE7dT-zPlfM6g5qPGM9Tz-z5BNVV2tmAqUyghcysDN2iavU1DovC_G8hLn0hvPLN7BYWirfIs5VJae0PPCeSoTsiCfrk-6SnMvCJ0GTUY0w-0mhihpgUOWOo5uU/s1600/DSCN8069.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMCJCd8b2TozbVIe48NE7dT-zPlfM6g5qPGM9Tz-z5BNVV2tmAqUyghcysDN2iavU1DovC_G8hLn0hvPLN7BYWirfIs5VJae0PPCeSoTsiCfrk-6SnMvCJ0GTUY0w-0mhihpgUOWOo5uU/s320/DSCN8069.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
At this point, it was about 10:30 at night, I had a 17-year-old wanting help on designing letters for a sewing project she was working on, it was yukky hot even in the house, and I lost patience for taking more pictures.<br />
<br />
The next steps were: adding a small strap to each of the round ends of the bag;<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMWK-SxiE-DzKBIEiiEaAb8iuIaa3FQIZtM1guSUcxydqGlxA1KiWCM8dJT-UyElzEo1_SsJNPTmK0PKlUMCpgyRju0y-GAd45kdlwUQSk-JfNPUcniT_uwYd9ucyOY-inxyGY6_HDoMg/s1600/DSCN8075.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMWK-SxiE-DzKBIEiiEaAb8iuIaa3FQIZtM1guSUcxydqGlxA1KiWCM8dJT-UyElzEo1_SsJNPTmK0PKlUMCpgyRju0y-GAd45kdlwUQSk-JfNPUcniT_uwYd9ucyOY-inxyGY6_HDoMg/s320/DSCN8075.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Then assembling the ends and sides together. This is a little fidgety- I pinned one end to the sides to see how much extra fabric I had on each side, then carefully marked the seam location on each rectangle, sewed them together, and then cut off the excess fabric. Then, I went back and pinned the ends to the sides again and sewed the ends to the sides.<br />
<br />
I always thought it would make sense to use a yoga strap as a bag strap, so I wanted to try to make my own yoga strap and make it into a detachable handle for the bag. It's really easy- just buy D-rings from your local craft store, measure and sew together at least two layers of fabric using plenty of quilting, then stitch off one end of the strap and add the D-rings to the other end.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhx1sF3VpwtHGqC0UrbZVRlDjXP5IsBxN57qbY_056sQky0Z8tQ8lTaDDUyI-Kka_RPSw7JTJIEsMynlcay9fEIHzItOolyWpF0uh_YLjn_X8w1ixzpHy27I8qLFVZTnXUB149TO08BcyM/s1600/DSCN8070.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhx1sF3VpwtHGqC0UrbZVRlDjXP5IsBxN57qbY_056sQky0Z8tQ8lTaDDUyI-Kka_RPSw7JTJIEsMynlcay9fEIHzItOolyWpF0uh_YLjn_X8w1ixzpHy27I8qLFVZTnXUB149TO08BcyM/s320/DSCN8070.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
The strap attaches to the bag by slipping it through the loops on both ends of the bag and using the D-rings to attach the strap to itself.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYv2COA6VFDE-lmgeDxA0eK5pR3LlSpq604j5NV8WqJCmLQLlYobyjTaxSF7wKY4vsYr5TqdVrb1rANC452vzTt9CFUWUDFSE28__vpvJgslTjLH9CSXQcZKAVLc31YhbAoQiggzUDKWE/s1600/DSCN8072.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYv2COA6VFDE-lmgeDxA0eK5pR3LlSpq604j5NV8WqJCmLQLlYobyjTaxSF7wKY4vsYr5TqdVrb1rANC452vzTt9CFUWUDFSE28__vpvJgslTjLH9CSXQcZKAVLc31YhbAoQiggzUDKWE/s320/DSCN8072.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>

Which means that the zucchini and other vine plants are going crazy...<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9CqtmXjx_Q-k5-acziP3N5n6C16JNVANiSiubslX-PfsPgHn3rO6WBWiBkGKss6tbZiIVj6HBnnqGabdpcSQ91iaKbAPejZ6TiJoq6SRqT9wkRsJFSIK0_yxAT4m_AIJT9CqWAfIB69I/s1600/DSCN8054.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9CqtmXjx_Q-k5-acziP3N5n6C16JNVANiSiubslX-PfsPgHn3rO6WBWiBkGKss6tbZiIVj6HBnnqGabdpcSQ91iaKbAPejZ6TiJoq6SRqT9wkRsJFSIK0_yxAT4m_AIJT9CqWAfIB69I/s320/DSCN8054.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
This was a week ago. Yesterday I picked something like 10 zucchinis.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2cv0XnVdi_qDgDNoa-xkbYcnjUrReZcuZdDXqt1vvkJydijJ2Bro2QKEQ156dR5vOiopxokOZepUfMy03cLgt1lCaepcolFV3zHOzOGofARHcWZua8SC_O44PMfoPqhddO4OmTrhhGX0/s1600/DSCN8056.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2cv0XnVdi_qDgDNoa-xkbYcnjUrReZcuZdDXqt1vvkJydijJ2Bro2QKEQ156dR5vOiopxokOZepUfMy03cLgt1lCaepcolFV3zHOzOGofARHcWZua8SC_O44PMfoPqhddO4OmTrhhGX0/s320/DSCN8056.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The cucumbers are also doing great. I tried trellising them this year and it is working well- the plants seem less susceptible to wilt because they have less contact with the soil and splashback from the heavy rains we've been having lately.<br />
<br />
The raised beds are also helping me win the war against the slugs and grasshoppers who love a diet of broccoli and cabbage. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwz6sy2dRBbb-dRpSxTmXVYm9qbkvxBIRBQBmeNGJ9zpkSSb4ZbJ3Iz_I4ie7sse-1PXy1Xf7rzretFcK1fvVNeKlYK0OtlpEfqK_qhfUDr6Q2KYdirtKYuoHkMBgp1N98L25wqwxXpnA/s1600/DSCN8059.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwz6sy2dRBbb-dRpSxTmXVYm9qbkvxBIRBQBmeNGJ9zpkSSb4ZbJ3Iz_I4ie7sse-1PXy1Xf7rzretFcK1fvVNeKlYK0OtlpEfqK_qhfUDr6Q2KYdirtKYuoHkMBgp1N98L25wqwxXpnA/s320/DSCN8059.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
The middle of the garden is getting weedy / grassy because we didn't have time to install raised beds there. I am trying to manage the mess with straw, some cardboard, and growing some corn and sunflowers to hide the mess.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpBrbd3HRYuR-5wH8x-MF7A0zhDQ9hO4GzZGlBuf86CBQuEBnNdvs8nVuRvdGKoRUzxZaQwQeW34jRCJcm99P5VoGMhf21EazeUn5MMS7Uf269LN2ezgNuHd0LYdAJjXurkwM7UkKcRas/s1600/DSCN8047.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpBrbd3HRYuR-5wH8x-MF7A0zhDQ9hO4GzZGlBuf86CBQuEBnNdvs8nVuRvdGKoRUzxZaQwQeW34jRCJcm99P5VoGMhf21EazeUn5MMS7Uf269LN2ezgNuHd0LYdAJjXurkwM7UkKcRas/s320/DSCN8047.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
But, I am pleased overall with the new garden arrangement. <br />

The schedule for doctor and hospital visits has been (thankfully) rapid, and she just had surgery yesterday. I wanted to make her a lap quilt for the surgery recovery and chemotherapy, but did not have a lot of time (major understatement!) to finish something.<br />
<br />
I knew I wanted to use some sort of cheery fabric, but not too fluorescent as is the trend at the moment, because neither of us likes the early 90's look for home decor.<br />
So, I tried pre-cuts for the first time. I got 2 charm packs of Glimma and 2 of Bella from Missouri Star Quilt Company - these had like 42 squares in each of them. Both fabric lines are by <a href="http://www.jansdotter.com/" target="_blank">Lotta Jansdotter</a>.<br />
I also picked up a jelly roll and charm pack of white fabric as well. Then I started brainstorming, which looked something like this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJpdPsdHv9zBdgvCLODTetIM-VHwOFRpJtAd4FjF7Fv06Urg1Ep3Yx3UN_wt3hx7HBCeVSH-VsTecWItxWDVD53St4i3ynIXEYaqMLpKVK3Vys1ntOX1U5qJMWkwCjnTUJ22wDQNjFe1c/s1600/IMAG0295.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJpdPsdHv9zBdgvCLODTetIM-VHwOFRpJtAd4FjF7Fv06Urg1Ep3Yx3UN_wt3hx7HBCeVSH-VsTecWItxWDVD53St4i3ynIXEYaqMLpKVK3Vys1ntOX1U5qJMWkwCjnTUJ22wDQNjFe1c/s320/IMAG0295.jpg" width="180" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXYeIi6U7RIZwjIRSWQLzXVS1LRVnWsZaXBQIQ6dYdwpWbvh82FRJ02SjZE2GpG6GayrWuZznmRgxe-u4hSAe8PjAHFJM1Jc9IpJzUHrqDNAUtBL4yliiC1nDOVB6zRArKehYwz4H7Z5Q/s1600/IMAG0298.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXYeIi6U7RIZwjIRSWQLzXVS1LRVnWsZaXBQIQ6dYdwpWbvh82FRJ02SjZE2GpG6GayrWuZznmRgxe-u4hSAe8PjAHFJM1Jc9IpJzUHrqDNAUtBL4yliiC1nDOVB6zRArKehYwz4H7Z5Q/s320/IMAG0298.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
I was going to use the jelly roll strips to surround the solid squares and use the patterned fabrics to make a plus-sign grid around these squares.<br />
It seemed like everything was working ok... until I realized I was 0.5" too short for the solid-white squares because I forgot about seam allowances when I sewed the jelly rolls to the squares. Soo... I decided to go wonky and log-cabined extra jelly roll strips around two sides of each square, then cut the square down to the correct size to produce randomly non-centered color squares:<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And I ended up with something that I found more pleasing than my original design. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBlQOxvBTnNujmTXMg4SeluLwNkdXsF4h6WC-55c9fYl3aipujuoBuWOoF4SNH-4-uZH1hxYorCvIA8oG0gc4lDkvK5FBXsWwqPUe1AFE9na45XsqsZMKFWEn5xmaOjQeluFiMFzSb2jI/s1600/IMAG0311.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBlQOxvBTnNujmTXMg4SeluLwNkdXsF4h6WC-55c9fYl3aipujuoBuWOoF4SNH-4-uZH1hxYorCvIA8oG0gc4lDkvK5FBXsWwqPUe1AFE9na45XsqsZMKFWEn5xmaOjQeluFiMFzSb2jI/s320/IMAG0311.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
I wanted to do something special for the back. I liked the pink I used on the front, and how it went with the gray/brown patterns from the Lotta Jansdotter collections. So after messing around a bit, I put together a breast cancer ribbon combined with a heart. I had to commandeer some light pink fabric from my stepdaughter's project, but there was extra and hey, I paid for it anyway :)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiawPmTHZxLqhBnmhH555imCf7kiNCyB4L4aKWm4_6iKrIdQKP4tocI5eZ-rfBUukaQc8V3zsP5_uh7U9EQ4w-DB_k7dTggDG0QpnlSf3ZDdv78JHVa_N2aq-MeAYcQmStmEbcPMOJwZig/s1600/IMAG0305.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiawPmTHZxLqhBnmhH555imCf7kiNCyB4L4aKWm4_6iKrIdQKP4tocI5eZ-rfBUukaQc8V3zsP5_uh7U9EQ4w-DB_k7dTggDG0QpnlSf3ZDdv78JHVa_N2aq-MeAYcQmStmEbcPMOJwZig/s320/IMAG0305.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
Once again, the cat "helped" a great deal. She and I managed to completely break this cheapo Singer machine trying to finish the binding the morning my mom went to the hospital for surgery.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEGjK33fUtIgYzDDOE83Hx02Xw1mBj9lx3tx0p2GURv3b7YpREu7J2DCLXKFhHaLKAp0jM17k9o-nzmDhFj_64LKyoGdpPQndB4LKRGJQqBzg51aOVR9uW6TnSSN_vH6JQTHVzfAWAr0g/s1600/IMAG0312.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEGjK33fUtIgYzDDOE83Hx02Xw1mBj9lx3tx0p2GURv3b7YpREu7J2DCLXKFhHaLKAp0jM17k9o-nzmDhFj_64LKyoGdpPQndB4LKRGJQqBzg51aOVR9uW6TnSSN_vH6JQTHVzfAWAr0g/s320/IMAG0312.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
And here it is! I am very happy with the results, especially since I was able to get the quilt sandwich to work so that I didn't have any wrinkles in the back. I basically have to tape everything down to the carpet in the living room, which is not convenient for anyone but is the only way this seems to work for me.<br />
Front:<br />

Best of all, my mom loved it and they already used it to cover her up and prop her up in the car on the way home after surgery. It only took me a little more than a year to complete.<br />

For one thing, I had a lot of unwanted help. For example:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSBVMQGmqanvHpxpBw1lBCyT8Jb3wwDD_e6uCBD2g5m2TO5M-JrSvy4Jx3b1NqGWCspVRugjcqEddP8js8aCY5APDb9e4pVqgCBAybHEcZnNK_bWOs3VhgJCHIPS7Ma9KoGcjnDZC7KIs/s1600/IMAG0261.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSBVMQGmqanvHpxpBw1lBCyT8Jb3wwDD_e6uCBD2g5m2TO5M-JrSvy4Jx3b1NqGWCspVRugjcqEddP8js8aCY5APDb9e4pVqgCBAybHEcZnNK_bWOs3VhgJCHIPS7Ma9KoGcjnDZC7KIs/s320/IMAG0261.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
I would say that my cat Sushi is not so much a Quilt Inspector as a Quilt Inhibitor and overall Highly Effective Cat Blocker at any activity that prevents her from sitting on my lap or putting her face in my face. She knows very well that her tail is interfering with the one thing I am trying to concentrate on. In this case, cutting 3.5" strips for the back of the quilt.<br />

Here is Sushi holding down the cut strips for the back of the quilt for me, in case a sudden gust of wind finds its way through our house. Or another cat gets close and tries to claim the fabric.<br />

Here we are sewing/preventing sewing the strips together. There wasn't too much of a plan for the back of the quilt except to use up as much of the leftover material from the HSTs on the front of the quilt. <br />

Here we are quilting the HST quilt. This is the first time I used my old-timey Singer to quilt and bind. It was the next-to-last time I used the white new Singer to piece, as I busted it on the next project.<br />
<br />
And here is the quilt, made for my husband and just in time for Father's Day <strike>2012</strike> 2013! But wait... something is not quite right...<br />

There are 16 squares for a 12-month block-of-the-month quilt...<br />
Long story short, I started this tutorial in early 2012 but ended up having some significant surgery and recovery starting in May. At some point, I just decided to try to do what I could, as fast as I could. So, I started doubling up blocks - I did two of the same block. I still didn't finish in the summer, and so I just ended up picking my favorite blocks from the whole year and doing two of each to make 16 total. Seems fitting that I am missing some months' blocks as I felt like I missed some months from last year myself!<br />

This is the strippy back. I ended up organizing three sets of strips in an intentionally imperfect tone gradient and then flipping the middle set to create some contrast.<br />

It's been a while since I updating the garden status. After the grassy mess of last fall, I decided to go nuclear and cover the garden with cardboard, build raised beds, and fill them with new dirt.<br />
Stupid Bermuda Grass!<br />

The corn theme is because they are from Iowa.<br />
These pillowcases are easy to make and are also easy to customize. Nice fast project!<br />
